Interstate 295 Flyover Project Update

As you’re probably well aware, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is in the process of constructing a huge flyover ramp that will connect Interstate 295 to Route 288 and allow traffic to flow more freely. As part of the process, crews are also widening the Pouncey Tract Road bridge. Construction has caused daily traffic headaches for drivers, but that may soon end.

The contractor, English Construction, has a deadline of June 12 to complete the bridge construction. To speed things up and get the traffic flowing again, VDOT has offered to pay the company a $3,500 bonus for every day the new bridge lanes are open ahead of schedule. If the contractor falls behind and misses the deadline, however, they owe the state that amount daily as well.

Even if the Pouncey Tract Road bridge opens, there is still other significant construction in the immediate surrounding area because of the project. It won’t be all that much longer until the workers and orange cone disappear from the Short Pump landscape, though. The entire flyover and widening project should be completed in early 2009.
