VDOT Explains Strange Overnight Noises

Many area residents wrote us emails asking if we knew what the source of a strange noise was last week. The noise was described by most as a large jackhammer or heavy equipment doing demolition work, and was extremely loud. As we suspected, it was the sound of construction work on the I-295/I-64 flyover project. VDOT Spokeswoman Dawn Eischen explains further.

“The demolition activities on the existing I-295 bridge over I-64 that were causing overnight disturbances were completed [a few nights ago],” Eischen said. “We modified the time the contractor started the work so perhaps they might finish earlier in the night, but there was nothing we could do about the demolition noise.”

From the reports we received, residents from Barrington Valley to The Village At Innsbrook and a few places in between could hear the noise loudly enough to be somewhat concerned as to what was going on. “Doing the demolition in the daytime would have caused major congestion along I-64 because lane closures were necessary in order to do the work,” Eischen explained.
