A national outdoor equipment and clothing chain is opening a store at West Broad Village in November. Recreational Equipment, Inc., known as REI, announced this morning the 26,500-square-foot store will cover two floors and offer camping, climbing, cycling, fitness, and hiking gear.

After three years of construction and headaches for drivers, including barrels, cones, lane closures and traffic backups, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the project is finally complete. The Henrico County School Board voted unanimously tonight to adopt a revised version of “Pairing 3,” concluding a process that began in earnest last October when a 70-member volunteer committee began meeting to devise potential plans. The new school boundaries will take effect at the beginning of the 2010-11 school year.

Hundreds of Henrico residents attended three public forums last week to weigh in on the three redistricting pairings being considered by the Henrico County School Board. The lengthy redistricting process is scheduled to conclude May 28, when the School Board votes to adopt one of the three pairings.

And now come the bargain hunters. At 1:30 Thursday, around 15 to 20 shoppers cruised through S&K Menswear in Short Pump looking for bargains. Most left the store with several items on first day of the chain’s going out of business sale.

Another Short Pump-based retailer will be winding down in the unglamorous fashion of a going-out-of-business sale. Just like Circuit City before it, at the end of its corporate life no other company was interested in buying S&K Famous Menswear and trying to turn it around.

S&K Famous Brands, headquartered in Short Pump, announced plans just after 1:00 p.m. today to liquidate assets and close all 105 of its remaining stores nationwide. Sales are expected to begin tomorrow. S&K filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy back in February, listing assets at the time of $41,440,100 and debts of $35,499,000.

Henrico Police think two robberies in as many grocery stores in Short Pump last week are related, based on witness reports and surveillance footage. The Short Pump Ukrop’s was robbed last Wednesday morning, and the Whole Foods at West Broad Village was robbed on Friday evening.
