Repaving Of Interstate 64 In West End To Start Next Week

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contractor, Branscome Inc. of Williamsburg, will begin a $35 million project to repair and repave 5.5 miles of Interstate 64 between the Bryan Park Interchange and Parham Road in the West End. Rehabilitation will include all east and westbound through lanes and more than 35 ramps.

Concrete pavement repair will begin Monday, October 12 with asphalt overlay starting in spring 2010 and project completion by November 2010.

“Permanently repairing the pavement on I-64 is a high priority for VDOT,” said Tom Hawthorne, Richmond district administrator. “Now that work is beginning, our goal is to get the repair and overlay completed as quickly as possible.”

The I-64 corridor in western Henrico County was built in the 1960s and accommodates approximately 140,000 vehicles per day.

Drivers can expect periodic I-64 ramp detours overnight during construction. These scheduled detours will allow the contractor to make pavement repairs and apply asphalt to the surface.

The first ramp detour is scheduled for October 29 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and will affect access to I-95 south/I-64 east from I-195 north (Exit 28), weather permitting. In addition, drivers can expect overnight and weekend lane closures and traffic shifts starting later this month for the duration of construction. VDOT will announce all ramp closures, detour routes and lane closures several days prior to implementation.
