Short Pump Water Tower Getting $1 Million In Maintenance & Improvements

A familiar landmark in the Short Pump area is getting a makeover. The large blue water tower adorning the “County of Henrico” lettering near the intersection of Cox and Three Chopt roads is receiving a new paint job and some additional necessary improvements.

The project, contracted out by Henrico County to Corfu Contracting of Oakton, Virginia, started in November of 2009, but visible changes, including painters’ scaffolding and harness equipment, weren’t seen until last week.

Kristy Marshall, Community Liason for the Henrico County Department of Public Utilities, says the project will cost taxpayers a total of $1,105,209 and take approximately one year to complete, weather permitting.

Originally constructed in 1987, the tank has a total water capacity of two million gallons.

Other enhancements will also be made to the structure beyond just a paint job, though. “The project also includes adding a new mixing system inside of the tank to enhance water quality, making some security enhancements and installing a new roof vent,” Marshall said. “Overall, there will be no noticeable changes to the tank once the project has been completed.”
