The 140,000 daily drivers traveling along the I-64 corridor west of Richmond are enjoying a less bumpy ride thanks to the completion of the I-64 resurfacing project. Contractor Branscome Inc. of Williamsburg wrapped up the $35 million repair and repaving project between the I-95/I-195 Bryan Park interchange and Parham Road last week.
The project was completed one month ahead of the scheduled November 2010 completion and within the projected budget.
“The VDOT project team and the contractor worked very hard, often around the clock to complete this project despite the tough winter and extreme summer heat,” said Justin Sayko, VDOT project manager. “We’re pleased with the quality of this project and have already heard from some satisfied drivers.”
The concrete repairs and new pavement should extend the life expectancy of the I-64 corridor west of Richmond for at least 50 years with scheduled maintenance. The resurfacing project began in October 2009 and included concrete pavement repairs and asphalt overlay to 5.6 miles of I-64 east and westbound. More than 35 ramps and merge lanes were also resurfaced as part of this project.
Meanwhile, new improvements have been announced for Pouncey Tract Road, just north of Short Pump.
Colony Construction, Inc. of Powhatan was awarded a $728,000 contract, a portion of which will be used to overlay the existing pavement, and widen and pave the shoulders on Pouncey Tract. This safety improvement will prevent the edge of the pavement from crumbling and will provide drivers with a smoother transition from the road to the shoulder. Chamberlayne Road in Eastern Henrico will also be resurfaced with a portion of the funds.
Expect alternating lane closures during construction. The contractor will maintain at least one travel lane at all times. Completion expected in May 2011.
