The Official Guide To Richmond's Far West End
The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting tomorrow to gather the community’s input regarding a two mile stretch of Springfield Road that’s seen its share of serious, and sometimes fatal, accidents over the years.
ACAC Fitness & Wellness Center broke ground late last week on its new health club in West Broad Village in Richmond. Owner Phil Wendel welcomed Governor Robert F. McDonnell, Henrico County Supervisors David A. Kaechele and Frank J. Thornton, and many West Broad Village neighbors to the ceremony.
The North Gayton Road Extension Project, Henrico County’s $48 million plan to alleviate congestion throughout Short Pump, is making progress. Crews have placed steel across Interstate 64 for a new bridge, much of the roadway has been paved and a new intersection has been constructed where the new road meets Bacova Drive. The Henrico County Planning Commission heard two development cases affecting the Short Pump area at its regularly scheduled monthly public hearing last week. Among them was a proposed office and townhome development and a new substation for Dominion Virginia Power.
One of Innsbrook’s largest property owners has taken a major step toward transforming the suburban office park into a more urban environment. Highwoods Properties has submitted a zoning application that would allow the firm to develop new office towers, apartment buildings, retail shops and streets on the 188 continuous acres it owns in Innsbrook, which accounts for about a third of the park.
The new North Gayton Road extension will pierce what Henrico planning officials are calling the final frontier in terms of undeveloped land in the West End. It’s a swath of rural acreage along Bacova Drive and Kain Road, west of Pouncey Tract. And along with the new thoroughfare comes the first plan to begin developing the land.
As Short Pump has transitioned from a rural outpost to suburban destination over the past decade and a half, much of the rural character and landmarks that dotted the landscape before the expansive commercialism have faded away.
