A local home builder picked up a national award for their Short Pump home design center at West Broad Village earlier this month. The National Sales and Marketing Council (NSMC) of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) honored Eagle Construction of VA at the 2012 National Sales and Marketing Awards, The Nationals.
The west corner of West Broad Street and Pouncey Tract Road, vacant for the past several years, is about to get new life breathed into it. A new 12,000-square-foot Walgreen’s drug store has been approved on a 1.62 acre parcel where a former Wachovia Bank and Miller’s Neighborhood Market currently stand. Both will soon be demolished.
Acclaimed chef Peter Chang, known for his Szechwan-style Chinese cuisine and a number of restaurants he’s started in the southeast, has quite the following. This past week, Chang opened Peter Chang’s Cafe in the Short Pump Commons shopping center near Walmart, and everyone took notice–foodies and otherwise.
Chipotle might have a new local competitor slinging burritos and tacos. Café Rio, which like Chipotle markets itself as more up-market than fast food but without a wait staff, is negotiating on properties in Richmond, according to Ben Craner, the company’s chief marketing officer.
Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be any more variations on the frozen yogurt shop, here come two more. Dustin Smith, Amanda Leininger and her mother plan to open Mix It, a self-serve frozen yogurt and cereal bar, in West Broad Village in March.
CarMax announced Monday that it is looking to add almost 1,000 new positions. The company, headquartered on Tuckahoe Creek Parkway, just west of Short Pump, said the 965 positions will be added at its locations across the country to satisfy seasonal staffing needs.
Grocery chain Food Lion’s parent company Delhaize Group announced the closure of 113 underperforming stores across the United States Thursday morning. Two of the stores slated for closure are in the West End. One of those is in the immediate Short Pump area.
A local contemporary home furnishings store that opened a Short Pump location a year ago is going back to its roots. LaDifférence announced Monday that it’s closing its location at West Broad Village in Short Pump. The company will hold a liquidation at the store, with similar deals at its flagship location in Shockoe Bottom.
Short Pump cupcake bakery Frostings took second place on Cupcake Wars, a realty show where bakers vie for $10,000 and a chance for their sweets to appear at a culinary event.
Almost exactly two years after a three-alarm fire devastated popular local restaurant Zorba’s, the Far West End Greek & Italian eatery has reopened following extensive renovations. The restaurant, in the Tuckernuck Plaza shopping center, has been a staple in the community since opening in 1998.
