The Official Guide To Richmond's Far West End
In this week’s edition of Short Pump Shorts, our roundup of smaller happenings in the Far West End, we have information on a new church planning to build at Nuckols and Pouncey Tract and a playground in the works for the West Broad Village development.
The Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa is partnering with CARITAS for a pillow drive to help those in need in our area. The organization, that helps individuals and families transitioning from homelessness to self-sufficiency, is collecting pillows today until New Year’s Day at the hotel.
This is your opportunity to clean out your closets and donate something you already have, but don’t use, to a good cause. Over the next two weeks, Saxon Shoes will wrap up their 2012 Saxon Shoes for the Needy program. Donated shoes will benefit deserving area families through the programs of The Salvation Army ARC.
Some big musical acts will join some of Richmon’s favorite local radio personalities for an event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation this weekend.
Popular local radio personalities from 103.7 The River have been broadcasting live since yesterday and will continue to through tomorrow evening at the Kroger at 11895 West Broad Street, across from Short Pump Town Center. The broadcasts are part of Cox Media Group-Richmond’s month long food drive called Feed Richmond, benefitting the Central Virginia Food Bank.
Sweet Spot in West Broad Village is helping to make the holiday season a little sweeter for those who serve our country abroad. The shop partnered with neighboring Pocahontas Middle School to set up a drop off location for Halloween candy donated from the shop’s campaign to collect the sweets to send to our troops overseas.
A 36 hour feat that many thought impossible has netted more than $2,500 for a local charity. The Salvation Army Richmond’s Music Director Matt Sims played his instrument for an entire day and a half outside Dick’s Sporting Goods at Short Pump Town Center, a feat never before accomplished by any Salvation Army musician anywhere.
Local retail store Saxon Shoes recently launched the nineteenth year of the Saxon Shoes for the Needy program, collecting used, but useable shoes to benefit area families in need. Churches, schools, scout troops, and other community groups and organizations in the Short Pump area are encouraged to participate and help Saxon spread the word about the need for shoe donations in November and December.
On Friday, November 11th, Central Virginia will once again welcome the familiar sounds of bells and Christmas music as The Salvation Army begins its annual Red Kettle Campaign.This year’s campaign will officially kick off at 9 a.m. when Matt Sims, Music Director for The Salvation Army Central Virginia, plays his first note at a Red Kettle at Short Pump Town Center. Sims will continue playing notes until 9 p.m. on Saturday, November 12th, having played for a grand total of 36-hours, a feat never before attempted by any Salvation Army musician.
The Children’s Museum of Richmond is teaming up with a local insurance agency to raise funds for Louisa County Schools, which suffered extensive damage in the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that hit central Virginia on August 23, 2011. CMoR will open its doors for this special benefit at both its Central and Short Pump locations on Saturday evening, November 5.
