Deep Run High School to Host Original Coach and Players from T.C. Williams Titans

The Deep Run Marathon Dance student committee will be hosting a “Remember the Titans” Movie Night. Tickets are $5 per person at the door for a meet and greet with 87-year-old Coach Yoast, Petey Jones, and several other Original Titans. Light concessions will be available during the meet and greet and attendees are welcome to bring items to be autographed and take photos with the Titans.

Springfield Park Elementary Academic Competition Team Places First in State

The Springfield Park Elementary Knowledge Master Open team competed against 203 teams from all over the United States to place first in both the county and state, and 23rd in the nation overall.

Sixth Grader Wins County-Wide Spelling Bee for Fourth Consecutive Year

After a nail-biting 19 rounds of spelling word after word, Aditya Kannoth, a sixth-grader at Moody Middle School, won first place in the Henrico County Public Schools District-Wide Spelling Bee for the fourth year in a row. Kannoth spelled “surrealism” to become the spelling bee champion.

As an athlete and physical education teacher at Rivers Edge Elementary School, Rhett Rutman started to realize there weren’t many books that promoted exercise within the classroom, so with an R.E.B. Award grant he won in 2009, Rhett and his wife, Meredyth, created a children’s book about two subjects close to their heart–exercise and children.

Deep Run High School’s award-winning Blue Cheese Robotics team hosted a robotics tournament on Saturday, November 19th, inviting 24 area teams to attend from Henrico and surrounding counties, which amounted to over 100 participants.

Local Travel Insurance Company Accepting Applications for Study Abroad Scholarship

Mondial Assistance USA, a global travel insurance and assistance company with U.S. headquarters in the West End, announced that it is now accepting applications for its 2012 travel scholarship program, ScholarTrips. The program is open to middle and high school students from the city of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield, Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent and Charles City. Four recipients will receive scholarships of $2,500 for study abroad programs. The winners will be announced by January 13, 2012.
