Children’s Museum of Richmond’s Short Pump Location Hosting Louisa Earthquake Fundraiser

The Children’s Museum of Richmond is teaming up with a local insurance agency to raise funds for Louisa County Schools, which suffered extensive damage in the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that hit central Virginia on August 23, 2011. CMoR will open its doors for this special benefit at both its Central and Short Pump locations on Saturday evening, November 5.

Henrico County Offering Free Debris Collection Following Hurricane Irene

Henrico County’s Department of Public Works is offering a free pickup service to assist in residents’ cleanup efforts following Hurricane Irene. The county is currently working to remove debris from public roadways as quickly as possible to ensure roads are safe for the public and emergency response vehicles, which is their first priority.

Hurricane Irene blew through our area on Saturday, leaving a trail of damage and over 92,000 Henrico County residents without power at the height of the storm. Sustained winds above 30 miles per hour and gusts well over 60 brought down trees and power lines and blocked many roads.

House in Hampshire Subdivision Catches Fire Following Apparent Lighting Strike

A home in the Hampshire subdivision sustained considerable damage when it caught fire Thursday evening, due to what appears to have been a lightning strike. It happened at the corner of Norwich Parkway and Barnsley Place.

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake, the strongest to hit Central Virginia since 1897, struck just before 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The epicenter of the quake, near Mineral, Virginia, was felt very strongly in the Short Pump area.

Several inches of snow and freezing rain fell over Central Virginia Thursday, closing schools and businesses and putting a damper on holiday shopping. Hundreds of accidents were also reported throughout the metro area when snow began sticking immediately to below freezing asphalt just after rush hour.
