Richmond’s largest youth road race sprints into the Far West End this weekend for its fourth year. The Short Pump Mile and Express Run presented by C&F Bank and Lite 98 will be held this Sunday, September 30th on the road surrounding Short Pump Town Center, and there’s still time to sign up.
Almost 900 runners have already signed up. While online registration is now closed, in-person signups can be completed during packet pickups, which are taking place at the race’s start location, in front of American Family Fitness on Friday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
The first heat will take place at 7:45 a.m. Sunday.
A race t-shirt will be given out to all who participate. Runners that complete the mile run will also receive a commemorative finishers medal, and are invited to a fun post-race celebration at the Short Pump Town Center Commons area.
Individual awards are given out by age groups, allowing seven year olds to compete with runners their same age, while allowing the more competitive middle and high school runners to race separately.
To accommodate so many runners, the race is broken up into twelve separate heats, each containing just 30-50 runners of similar age and gender. This allows for a competitive, yet safe race for all ages. There is also a short “Express Run” measuring just 400 meters for children five and under.
